Resilience Thought Leadership by Dr Kelly Culver and Peter Jones powered by their collaborative venture, The Resilience Trinity Limited (UK).
In 2022 the WEF said “the stakes are high…resilience failures cost, and their impact on annual GDP growth is 1% - 5% globally”.
Fast forward, as we move into the final quarter of 2024, global CEOs are focused on five critical issues:
Geopolitical Instability: With ongoing conflicts and shifting alliances, geopolitical risks continue to be a top concern, requiring robust scenario planning and proactive risk management.
Inflationary Pressures: Rising inflation remains a significant worry, especially as it impacts costs, pricing strategies, and overall economic stability.
Adoption of Advanced Technologies: CEOs are increasingly relying on Generative AI and other digital tools to drive innovation and efficiency, but the challenge lies in scaling these technologies effectively across their organizations.
Talent Management: Attracting and retaining top talent while adapting to shifting labor expectations is more crucial than ever, especially in a competitive and dynamic job market.
Regulatory Scrutiny: Heightened regulations, particularly around data privacy and sustainability, are pushing CEOs to stay ahead of compliance requirements while maintaining operational flexibility.
The biggest challenge, cutting across all of this, is uncertainty.
Resilience is the thread that ties these concerns together. In a world where uncertainty is the only constant, the ability to adapt, innovate, and withstand shocks is what will set leading organizations apart.
In today's complex business landscape, resilience is not just a strategy; it's a necessity to adapt and thrive in the face of uncertainty and navigate change with confidence and foresight. NEDs play a crucial role in embedding resilience into the corporate DNA, ensuring long-term sustainability and success.
A study by PwC in 2023 found that “resilient organisations experienced 40% fewer operational disruptions and were able to return to normal operations 50% faster than their less resilient counterparts. This same study showed that 89% of business leaders view resilience as a critical strategic priority” (PwC Resilience Research, 2023).
The biggest problem about resilience today, from a company’s perspective, is that the resilience lens is too short. To thrive in a world in which new challenges continue to evolve, building resilience isn’t—and can’t be—a “one-and-done” activity. Resilience requires a different mental model - it needs a long-term lens, and this is where the Board and Non-Exec Director excel! The role of the Board, from a resilience perspective, is to ensure the sustainability of the company through its resilience strategy - the resilience of a company is the differentiating factor between failure and success. When Boards use a long-term perspective aligned with their strategic objectives, they are more likely to reinforce their organisation’s resilience.
At The Resilience Nexus, we empower companies to build resilience into their core strategies, ensuring they not only survive but thrive in the face of these global challenges.
The Resilience Nexus exists to empower leaders, businesses, board members and investors to harness the power of resilience, driving innovation, adaptability, and sustainable growth. We are committed to building a global network where resilience is recognized not just as a survival mechanism but as a core driver of long-term success and transformation.
